He went on to win prizes at both the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition and at the International Hugo Wolf Lied Competition in Stuttgart and has since given recitals for the BBC, at Wigmore Hall, the Oxford International Song Festival and the Schwarzenberg Schubertiade. This season sees him return to the Wigmore Hall for a Mendelssohn and Liszt programme with Julius Drake and Miah Persson and make his Amsterdam Concertgebouw recital debut singing Mahler Das Lied von der Erde as part of their Mahler Festival.
On the opera stage, he has made strong impressions recently singing Jupiter in Handel Semele for Opéra de Lille with Emmanuelle Haïm, Komische Oper Berlin and Glyndebourne Festival; Mozart Mitridate, re di Ponto at the Royal Danish Opera; Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea conducted by Laurence Cummings and Prologue and Quint in The Turn of the Screw for Opéra national de Lorraine, Nancy.
Stuart’s wide concert repertoire ranges from Bach, through Beethoven and Mozart, to the 20th Century. He sang his first St Matthew Passion Evangelist with Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen at the 2021 BBC Proms, performing it again last season with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Matthew Halls and, in the current season, will sing it with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He also regularly sings both Evangelist and Arias in the St John Passion, most recently Arias with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Alain Altinoglu. Handel also features regularly in his calendar singing Messiah on tour in Europe with the Insula Orchestra, for the Boston Handel and Haydn Society and Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Handel Samson with the English Concert and, in the current season, Handel L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato at Wigmore Hall with Arcangelo.
He has recently performed Frank Martin’s Golgotha with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Britten War Requiem with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Britten Serenade with the Britten Sinfonia at the Aldeburgh Festival. Other concert repertoire performed includes Haydn The Creation, Mendelssohn Lobgesang and Elijah, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Bruckner Te Deum and Frank Martin Le Vin herbé.
