Welsh tenor Dafydd Jones is a member of the Bayerische Staatsoper Opernstudio in Munich. His operatic work there has included roles in Carmen, La Fille du régiment, La Traviata, and Die Zauberflöte, as well as appearances in Der Englische Katze, Beethoven’s Fidelio, and Parsifal.
On the broader operatic stage, his highlights include the title role of Britten’s Albert Herring for Opera North, Fenton in Falstaff at the Verbier Festival, and Telemaco in John Caird’s production of Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria for Garsington Opera — a company with which he has a developing relationship, having made his festival debut there as Pastore in Caird’s production of L’Orfeo as an Alvarez Young Artist. He made his international debut as Clotarco in Armida at the Bregenzer Festspiele.
A committed song singer as well as an opera performer, Dafydd has participated in the French Song Exchange programme at Wigmore Hall, appeared as a Young Artist at the Leeds Lieder Festival, and made his debut at the Oxford Lieder Festival. He is a Samling Artist.
His competition record is exceptional. In 2024 he won the Gold Medal of the Royal Overseas League Music Competition at Wigmore Hall and the Lies Askonas Competition at the Royal College of Music. He was awarded the Ferrier Loveday Song Prize in the finals of the Kathleen Ferrier Competition, and won the Prix Thierry Mermod at the Verbier Festival as a member of the Academy Atelier Lyrique.
Dafydd is a graduate of the Royal College of Music International Opera Studio, where he studied with Nicky Spence and Caroline Dowdle, and holds a master’s degree from the Royal College of Music, where he was awarded the Queen Mother Rose Bowl.
