Benjamin Hulett trained as a choral scholar at New College, Oxford before studying with David Pollard at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He was a member of the Hamburgische Staatsoper from 2005 to 2009, and has since built an international career spanning the Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Staatsoper, Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, the Salzburger Festspiele, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Royal Ballet and Opera, Madrid’s Teatro Real, and the Opera di Roma.
Particular highlights have included Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress across a number of French opera houses; The Rector in Peter Grimes at Teatro alla Scala, Milan; Kudrjas in Kát’a Kabanová for the Salzburger Festspiele and Opéra de Lyon; Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Glyndebourne Festival; and Tamino in Die Zauberflöte for the Royal Ballet and Opera and in concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle.
In the UK, Benjamin has performed with the Royal Ballet and Opera, the Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Opera Holland Park, Garsington Opera, Welsh National Opera, and at the National Theatre in Sir Jonathan Miller’s staging of Bach’s St Matthew Passion.
On the concert platform, Benjamin has sung major works including Handel’s Messiah at the Musikverein, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Bach’s St Matthew Passion, and Henze’s Voices with the London Sinfonietta. His recordings have received nominations and awards from BBC Music Magazine, Gramophone, the Grammys, L’Orphée d’Or, and Diapason.
