Handel’s Alessandro
Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley
Handel wrote this opera in 1726. The lively score and libretto explores the romantic life of conqueror Alexander the Great, focusing less on Alessandro’s acts of war and more on a turbulent love triangle. French countertenor and Handel specialist Christophe Dumaux is Alessandro; American soprano Joélle Harvey plays Lisaura, and mezzo-soprano Xenia Puskarz Thomas is her competitor, Rossane.
“This ensemble sets a standard for Handel performance in the 21st century.”—The New York Times
