The English Concert Returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse
Ahead of our 2018-2019 season, we are delighted to announce our return to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe on 8th July.
In recent years, we’ve been involved in a number of projects at the Globe, from retracing Charles Burney’s footsteps through the musical landscape of the 17th and 18th centuries with tenor Mark Padmore, to Samuel Adamson’s play Gabriel with trumpeter Alison Balsom.
This year, and in anticipation of Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s new play Emilia, we delve into the world of Emilia Bassano, the supposed ‘Dark Lady’ of the Sonnets and muse to William Shakespeare. One of England’s first feminist poets, her place in history has been largely erased, yet she lives on as the possible inspiration for Shakespeare’s ‘Emilia’ characters in Othello, The Two Noble Kinsmen, and The Winter’s Tale.
As a member of the Lanier family and daughter of a royal musician, we pair her poetry with the music of her family, friends, and contemporaries in the intimate candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
